SAXON

Saxon es una banda británica de Heavy metal formada en 1976 en Barnsley, Yorkshire. Como virtuales líderes de la New Wave Of British Heavy Metal tuvieron un breve período de considerable popularidad en el Reino Unido durante los ochenta, y llegaron también a probar relativo éxito en Europa y Japón. En la actualidad siguen en activo.
Sus componentes iniciales fueron Peter "Biff" Byford como cantante, Paul Quinn y Graham Oliver como guitarristas, Steve Dawson al bajo y Pete Gill batería. Inicialmente se llamaron Son of a Bitch. Pasaron a ser conocidos mayormente en la gira de 1979 con Motörhead. En ese año el grupo firmó con la casa de discos Carrere y realizaron su álbum Saxon. En 1980, su siguiente disco Wheels of Steel trajo dos singles: el que da título al disco y 747 (Strangers in the Night). El álbum Strong Arm of the Law, considerado por los fans como uno de sus mejores trabajos, fue realizado a continuación en el mismo año, y siguió cosechando éxitos con su siguiente disco Denim and Leather (1981). La canción que da título al disco es considerada como todo un himno del heavy metal de inicios de los ochenta.
Fruto de esta popularidad surgieron una serie continuada de giras por el Reino Unido, pero Saxon nunca llegaron a ser verdaderamente conocidos en Estados Unidos. Después del álbum Power and the Glory (1983), Saxon fueron reorientándose hacia lo comercial obteniendo un éxito decreciente entre el público, a pesar de haber firmado contrato con la casa EMI. De hecho, el viraje hizo poco más que alejar a sus fans de toda la vida y empezaron a ser vistos por sus detractores como el perfecto ejemplo del cliché "heavy". Recientemente, han vuelto a sus raíces menos comerciales y han recuperado buena parte de audiencia.
A lo largo de la historia de Saxon, los cambios de componentes han sido frecuentas. Gill se fue en 1981 después de herirse la mano, y fue reemplazado por Nigel Glockler. Gill fue a parar a Motörhead, Dawson se fue en 1986; y Graham Oliver hizo lo mismo en 1995, siendo reemplazado por Doug Scarratt. Desde entonces Saxon ha permanecido relativamente estable en cuanto a sus componentes. Actualmente son Byford (cantante), Quinn y Scarratt (guitarristas), Nigel Glockler (batería) y Nibbs Carter (bajo).
Dawson y Oliver acabaron formando una especie de reedición de Son of a Bitch, que acabó considerándose como un Saxon alternativo, fruto de lo cual existe un litigio entre los dos Saxon.
